National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP®) Examination
Ready to complete the testing step toward California CNA certification? On approved dates when ICAN appears as an available location, eligible candidates may take the NNAAP® Examination at Inland Christian Academy of Nursing in Riverside. This two-part examination evaluates the knowledge and hands-on skills needed for safe, entry-level nurse aide practice.
Testing is by appointment only. Candidates must apply, receive approval, and schedule through the Southern California Regional Testing Center before arriving at ICAN. RTC does not schedule candidates automatically; approved applicants are responsible for selecting their own available date, time, and testing location.
What the NNAAP Examination Includes
Knowledge Examination
The knowledge examination contains 70 multiple-choice questions and allows up to two hours. Topics include physical care, psychosocial care, communication, client rights, legal and ethical responsibilities, and the nurse aide’s role on the healthcare team. An English audio option is available when properly requested.
Manual Skills Evaluation
Candidates perform five nurse aide skills within 30 minutes. Hand hygiene is included, while the remaining skills are selected from the current approved list. At least one skill includes a measurement. Every skill and required critical step must be completed successfully.

What is the NNAAP examination?
The National Nurse Aide Assessment Program examination is a competency evaluation used to assess whether a candidate has the knowledge and practical skills required for entry-level nurse aide work. For candidates using the Southern California RTC pathway, it consists of a knowledge examination and a manual skills evaluation.
Is ICAN the agency that approves or certifies CNA candidates?
No. ICAN’s role is limited to providing the testing location on dates when it is officially authorized and listed. RTC handles applications, scheduling, payment, and access to results. CDPH regulates CNA certification and determines whether all certification requirements have been completed.
What happens during the manual skills evaluation?
Candidates receive five assigned skills and have 30 minutes to complete them. Hand hygiene is always included. Four additional skills are selected, including one measurement skill. Candidates must pass all five assigned skills and correctly perform required critical elements.
Candidates may also be required to act as the resident or patient for another candidate’s skills evaluation. Clothing should permit safe participation in the assigned procedures.
Do not permanently state that the complete bank contains either 22 or 23 skills. Current official RTC and Credentia materials use different totals, so the page should direct candidates to the current handbook and skills list instead.
